Dubplate-Dollars

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

In its 100th issue, german Groove magazine author Miguel Ayala wrote his usual (tiny) DnB column, in which he wrote about the high connectivity of the DnB scene and implications for release sales. This story was referred to by a post in the german Future Music forum, in which again Miguel coined the term “Dubplate-Dollars”, expressing the financial or virtual profit made by owning exclusive audio material for djing.

While reading that thread, specifically certain posts complaining about the long interval between tracks being played out and being released in DnB compared to other genres, it suddenly all made sense to me. I think the whole issue is directly connected with the facts I visualized in “The Value Of Music”: Obviously, the stronger a scene is connected (in terms of exchanging music), the earlier the tunes will be played in a club or online set. On the other hand, the hard copy release cycle still takes its time, so there automatically is a huge gap in between. In other genres, people don’t exchange that much, so the chance of witnessing a new tune increases dramatically in the moment the promos are delivered, but not much earlier.

So if you omit the factor of financial success, DnB definitely is the genre which has already made the jump to digital distribution, while many other genres still work in the real-world cycle.

nphect & phace – Cavity [Syndrome] on promo now

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

Syndrome Audio is a new imprint coming from Holland and closely related to Citrus Recordings. The label will feature the crème de la crème of upfront neuro minded producers. With this first release the pace is set. On the A side Phace & Nphect team up to deliver a really deep funk track. “Cavity” kicks of with a beautiful atmospheric intro, that switches into a darker breakdown. The track drops heavily and has crisp original beats and superb midrange work. This is an absolute deep neuro banger. On the flip Mindscape brings “No Escape” a minimal stripped down bouncy b line bomb. The tune has killer militant beats a wicked groove and is basically all about headnocking. No Escape is a true dancefloor burner.

n.phect & dizplay interview (drumandbass.de)

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

The likeable producer-duo Sebastian and Henrik Wild a.k.a. N.Phect & Dizplay are not necessarily new to the game of Drum’n'Bass, but now with their forthcoming longplayer “Beautiful Bytes” they’re ready to take the next big step forward: beyond the usual 12″ vinyl-business they’re up to cause a stir with a cd-album. The intention is to reach a new audience without leaving the hard club-sound we all know and love them for behind. We met both of them in Cologne and in addition to some breaking news they also told us about their background and their point of view in general.

As we know, the two of you are brothers… so we ditch the question of how you met each other. Are you originally from cologne or have you moved there?
Dizplay: I once heard the “original Colognian” does not exist, they all immigrated, just like us. We’re both from a small town in Hesse, but came here after we finished school… a long time ago.

Concerning your roots: How did you get into DNB? You guys first started producing and not DJing?
Nphect: Actually we took both routes one can take to DNB: I started to DJ and Dizplay started to produce. He was in a Rock/Nu-Metal-band doing arrangements and beats on a drum-machine and therefore was not new to the matter. I came from the other direction, started to spin and once visited a Basswerk-party in Cologne where Matrix played and I stood for 4 hours in the club and was like “wow, that’s the hot shit, never heard that before!” Then we got together ’cause I really liked the sound and he knew how to do it – so the idea and the technique complemented each other quite well. And since we’re brothers we know what the other one likes and constantly push each other.
D: What initially got us into DNB were the usual suspects, like the Prodigy for instance. I guess there are many different ways that lead to DNB. A lot of people started out with HipHop or Reggae, we went via Prodigy, the Rock- and/or Techno-route. HipHop and Reggae are not necessarily our roots. But Techno, they experimented a lot in the 90s. Bands like “Fluke” who were very popular back then made it very easy to get into electronic music and DNB was just the next step, it was new and wicked.
N: I can remember that I got really hooked onto DNB through “koRn”. Back then one of their singles had a jungle-remix on it with a killer bassline and I really wanted to know how they made this sick bass, because I didn’t know these kind of twisted sounds from rock-productions, I just knew you couldn’t do that with a bass-guitar, you had to use a computer. From this moment on it was evident I had to produce DNB – it was exactly my kind of thing.

U3R EP cancelled

Saturday, June 10th, 2006

Due to U3R having serious trouble with their distributor, we felt we had to cancel the contract on the Blacklabel Vol.2 EP. We’re still in contact with U3R and are trying to find a solution.

As soon as we have news on this, we’ll post them on here.
